I never thought that I would write those words, but I really wish I have more time to write my thesis. Aka, do what I am supposed to do as a grad student.
At the end of the summer, as I explained here, I was ready to start. Every morning in September, I was behind my computer, trying to use all my data to make a historical story. It was hard at the beginning, but at some point, it worked.
But then, life (and the term) happened. From being a TA (with conferences and grading, ah! grading!) to plan and give three lectures to write blog posts on two websites to fill scholarship forms to a research project to take care of my children and sleep somewhere amongst all that, I stopped writing my thesis. When I had one-two days without activities or meeting, I didn’t write knowing that I wouldn’t have enough time to dive into my subject. So I read instead.
But the fact is, I WANT to write. I have all these ideas in my mind, ready to be put on paper. And I fear I will lose them in the land-of -the-ideas-never-written if I just put them on a Post-it instead of actually develop them for real.
So next term, I decided to focus more on my thesis. This semester was (probably) the last time I TA. That being said, all the things around thesis writing is not bad (except for the time-consuming aspect), I’ll talk about it in another post. And I am sure at some point soon, I won’t be able to look at my computer without despair, but that is also another story.
Do you have time to write? How do you manage to do it?
