I never thought I’d wish that I were a bird, but by the end of this post you might also.
I exercise quite frequently, and though I’ve never been a big fitness buff (pun intended) I still make time to keep fit and healthy. Interestingly, not all species have to do that. Imagine not ever having to lift a finger, yet staying as lean as an Olympic athlete.
Owing to that our tall hairless monkey bodies operate on a use-it-or-loss-it principle with regards to muscle mass and fitness, frequent exercise is necessary to stay healthy. Enviously, it would seem that not all animals are restrained to this lifestyle of keep-up. In fact, there are several species of migratory birds capable of complete lethargy for months on end, and then one day they just wake up and fly 3000km to their breeding grounds. That’s the equivalent of spending the entire summer binge watching Dr. Who on your sofa and then running a marathon every day from October until Christmas. Studies show that many migratory birds engage in no exercise like activity at all in preparation for their flight, yet always stay in top physic.
Admittedly most of us aren’t very interested in performing such incredible physical feats, we’re more concentrated on keeping our toes in sight. Still, it would be nice to be able to run countless marathons without committing your life to training for it.
So let’s figure out exactly what these birds are doing! Maybe I ought to be taking more bread from old men in the park. Either way, until we figure out how to GMO our bodies into growing goose muscle we’re all still going to have to keep hitting the gym.
