Winter is around the corner in Montreal!

Being someone that has an optimistic view on life, I am able to appreciate all seasons of the year. Each has specific qualities that make me fall in love with that particular season. The warm air of spring, the terraces and fun times that summer brings along and the beautiful colors of the trees in autumn are just a couple of examples. Although winter is not my favorite season (that would be fall!), it too consists of elements that make it a very enjoyable season for me. The long winter coats, comfy winter boots and cute hat and mittens necessary to survive a winter in Quebec, as well as drinking a mug of hot chocolate at home wrapped in PJs and a blanket while reading a good book are some of my favorite things that accompany winter.

The one most perfect facet of winter that makes me very happy is the presence of snow. I cannot express how happy and excited I become when the first snow falls. Today was this day! Albeit it did not last long and consisted only of a couple of snowflakes here and there, it did snow and it brought a very warm feeling to heart. I was unashamedly walking down the street smiling at the falling snowflakes and looking up at the sky. I love the first snow. Why? Quite simply, because it is a symbol of the joyful moments to come. It is a sign that winter is around the corner and that the cold has settled in. It’s time to trade that cute jacket for a warm winter coat and winter boots, plus all the not-so-optional accessories like a hat, scarf and gloves. The first snow is a sign that my favorite holiday is at a close. I am, of course, referring to Christmas. I will no doubt write about this in a later post, but the Christmas holidays is what I look forward to all year. Not for the presents that are infallibly numerous at my house every year, but for the good times shared and memories made with family and friends. If you are new to Montreal, you will soon learn that winter in Montreal is magical, if you can only appreciate it. Simply walk down Ste-Catherine with a hot cup of your favorite beverage and take in all the sights the decorated shops and city has to offer.

I know that such people exist, but I have difficulty understanding how anyone could hate snow. Sure, if you have a car you have to shovel snow for hours at times, but still, hate? It seems a strong word. What about the snowball fights amongst children or children at heart? What about building a snowman with family or friends? How can one forget the peaceful sound that our boots make when we walk on compacted snow? All these appeal to my senses and make me appreciate greatly if not love winter. I’m sure for the skier or fan of other such winter sports, winter is even more enjoyable, but unfortunately I am not one of those people. Maybe someday I will learn to ski. Is it ever too late?

Nonetheless, I hope that you will find at least one positive thing about this season to at the very least tolerate it. Hopefully you’ll even enjoy it a little.
